"Won't Start"
Ceramic on Sapele Hardwood Base

Mark and his wife Beth live in La Costa, and were born and raised in Michigan.  He retired after a successful engineering career in Silicon Valley, and they moved to So Cal.

Since 2003, Mark has devoted his time to figurative sculpture.  “On a dare, I took a community college sculpting class.  The first exercise was parts of the face.  A nose, a mouth, and eyes that I put together into a whole face.  Somehow, it just felt right.  From that point on, I couldn’t not sculpt,” says Mark.

Since then, he has kept on exploring, letting it take him where it will.  It has split into two paths: fine art, in the shadow of Hart, Bernini, and Houdon; versus a more visceral art reminiscent of the cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Mark’s pieces are generally larger than tabletop size.  Some are large multi-piece assemblies.  Mark said:  “In addition to realistic art, I also create whimsical pieces.  While I have no idea where this is leading me, I’m enjoying the journey immensely.“

Mark's work is currently included in the Fallbrook Art Center's Wheels of Desire, Motorcycle, Motocross & Supercross Show through August 15, 2010. His work has been featured at the San Dieguito Art Guild’s Off-Track Gallery in Encinitas. He was a featured artist for September 2009 at OTG. Also his juried piece "Our Lady of Zug Island" was on display at the Fallbrook Art Center Extreme Art show in October 2009.
